Back from a holiday break!

Just wanted to let you all know that I am now back from a little holiday break. I was away for about 2 weeks, and in that time 686 comment spams somehow made it though my filters :\

Strangely eneough, most of the comments were total giberish, came from a wide selection of IPs and didn't even contain any URLs. Not sure why they were posted seems to me that it was a denial of service attempt, though I'm not sure why my site was targeted.

Anyways, i'm back.. the garbage has been taken out and things will be getting back to normal.

Planet MovableType launches

Looks like Arvind from Movalog has launched a new MT related website. Planet Movable Type aggregates posts from a variety of Movabletype themed websites and displays them all on 1 page. PMT also offers RSS feeds of all these news items, becoming a one stop shop for anything MT related!

This will be a great resource for those that want to follow the MT news community more closely. Thanks for setting this up Arvind!

ImageGal 1.0 Released

I posted this article over at my personal blog dasme.org and figured that it might interest some of you.

---

It was a number of months back when I released a little demo of a simple image gallery solution I was working on called ImageGal.

It was received well by the blogging community and I have received nearly 100 emails from people who loved the idea and were using it on their sites. Not too shabby for a little modification done to a script posted on aListApart!

Shortly after that I mentioned that I had written a little php script that would dynamically build your image gallery for you. All you needed was the script I wrote, an images directory and a thumbnail directory; no html coding would be necessary to show the full gallery. After posting that tidbit I immediately had requests for it, the problem was the code wasn't fit for human consumption. Doh! I slowly worked on cleaning up the code and getting it ready for others to see.

I took my sweet ass time getting it out, but have unleased ImageGal 1.0 code named festivus to the hungry public. The archive that is available for download contains a working gallery (actually contains all the files used in the demo that I created), to make it easy for all of you to modify it for your needs.

Please check it out and let me know what you think here by leaving a comment. It took me a long time, but I hope it was worth the wait!

Question about posts

After posting the last 3 styles I realized that I really posted just 1 style with 2 mutations. I wanted to ask you guys how you would prefer to see styles like this posted in the future. Would you like them all posted separately so they each get their own icon in the All Styles list? Or would you prefer that I make 1 news post and just include the original and mutated styles in one big zip file?

I want to keep the signal to noise ratio down here, so wanted to see if posts like the last 3 bothered anyone. Hope you enjoy the new styles! I'm getting the others that I've created in the last little while ready for posting here as well. Stay tuned!

Jay Allen joins Six Apart

Wow this is great news, although not stylesheet related. Jay Allen, the author of the indispensable MT-Blacklist plugin, has joined Six Apart as the Movable Type product manager. Hopefully he can work magic in the form of other features like he did for the blacklist plugin.

If you aren't already using MT-Blacklist I highly suggest that you do. (you can download it here) Since it's release for MT 3.0 it has reduced my blog spam comments from 20 a day to maybe 1 a week. A great time savings that's for sure.

Welcome to the new MovableStyle!

If you are seeing this, the transition to the new look has been completed!

I've spent my free time for the last month or so creating this new design and getting Movabletype all set up to serve the new pages. There have been a huge number of changes that I've made and I'll try to highlight them all below.

New Design

I've worked hard on a new design for the site, and I think it turned out pretty well! I wasn't happy with the way the old site was always changing as the user viewed new styles. To still have the style switching capability I have created 2 "Test Sites" as I like to call them. One for MT 2.x styles/templates and one for MT 3.x. I think these will help the users to view the styles that they want, but still allow me to have a strong look and feel for the main site.

Individual Style Posts

Instead of textual links like I was doing in the past, I have taken screen shots of all the stylesheets as they are seen on the test sites. To view any of these styles on a test site you can simply click the large or small images that you will see around the site, and you will be taken over to the test site. You can quickly tell MT2 style posts from MT3 posts as there will be a small border in blue and orange respectively. And you will always be able to find the last 3 styles that were added at the top of the main page.

View all the Styles Quickly

In the side bar you can quickly view all the styles for your preferred version of Movabletype by selecting the appropriate category archive. At the bottom there is a also link to let you view all the styles by their small thumbnail as well.

As you can see there have been a huge number of changes, hopefully they are for the better. Please let me know what you think of the changes by posting a comment here. Seeing as the site is being ported over like this, you may get the odd broken link or error message. You can let me know about those too :)

Hope you all enjoy the new MovableStyle!
